Import Export Code (IEC) is a10-digit number issued by the regional office of the Director
General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), department of commerce, Government of India to any
importer or exporter to commence business. IEC is required for all imports and exports in the
country, other than the export or import of specifically mentioned technology or services. The
ICE code obtained by an importer or exporter is valid for all his branches or factories across
the country.
In general cases, an ICE is issued within 10 days from the submission of all required
documents. If an ICE is lost, a duplicate copy can be obtained by submitting the required
documents. IEC can also be obtained online.
IE Code is a must for all imports and exports made to and from the country. It is required for customs clearance and transfer of money abroad from banks.
Though IE code is required for all imports and exports, certain specified technology and services are exempt from IE code.
You need a bank account and PAN card number to obtain an IE Code. All other documents can be generated at the time of documentation.
In case the IE Code is lost under circumstance, you can reapply for one, provided all relevant documents are submitted. .
